Center for Research on Globalization, Peace and Democratic Governance (GLODEM) based at Koç University, pursues to engage with academic research on globalization, regionalization, peace, public administration and politics and governance. GLODEM Webinar Series, initiated to discuss and analyze selected current topics from an academic perspective with the experts of the issues, now continues its third session with the title of “A Discussion on Education Policies in Türkiye”. Title: A Discussion on Education Policies in Türkiye

Summary: Education Reform Initiative (ERG) aims to contribute to the development of Türkiye’s education system through annually published Education Monitoring Reports which produce objective, evidence-based, comprehensive evaluations regarding education policies in Türkiye. Education Monitoring Reports calls attention to the ongoing inequalities in the education system and examines topics such as the rising share of private education, government expenditure on education, the distribution of students according to school and program type indicators of quality education and the recent developments about teacher policies. Burcu Meltem Arık’s presentation will present recent policy evaluations on governance and funding, students and access to education, teachers, the content of education, educational environments, and educational outcomes. Her talk will underline the recommendation that child well-being approach must guide policy making. Presentation will be followed by a Q&A session moderated by Güneş Ertan.

Bio: Burcu Meltem Arık worked on education policies, environmental / nature education, sustainability education, climate change education, ecological literacy and biomimicry for over 20 years in civil society. Since 2017, she has been implementing data-based K-12 education policy monitoring studies at Sabancı University Education Reform Initiative as the ERG Education Observatory Coordinator. Previously, she worked with the Turkish Association for the Protection of Nature (DHKD), Nature Association (DD), UNEP, TEMA Foundation and ÇEKÜL Foundation. She taught Ecological Literacy and Sustainability, and Biomimicry at Istanbul Bilgi University between 2015-2020. She is a member of the IUCN Commission on Education and Communication (CEC) and Common Worlds Research Collective, also a board member of the Network of Education Policy Centers (NEPC) and the Buğday Association for Supporting Ecological Living.
